INK SCULPTURES series

This series, captured in 2012, starts with the question of how many possibilities are there in photography? To explore this, the project delves into the fundamental elements of every photograph, the basic colors. Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow are the building blocks that make all printed photographs possible. In response, Ignacio Calleja focused on creating images entirely from these colors.
“Ink Sculptures” is a series of photographs that resulted from many different attempts until the technique was optimal. The concept was to deconstruct traditional photography by reinterpreting the way a printer applies ink. What came out was a shower of different colors unlike any arrangement seen before, unmatched originality and randomness. The 11 resulting compositions differ in form, patterns and expected predictability. To truly connect with these images, viewers must engage deeply and form their own unique familiarity with each one.
"Ink Sculptures" marks the beginning of Calleja’s larger project, "Instant Sculptures”, witch is the result of Ignacio Calleja’s ongoing endeavor to master gradually a new set of skills as a sculptor of media for the soul purpose of being portrayed by photography.
ABOUT THE PROJECT “instant sculptures”
Ignacio Calleja by taking the task of searching for the new unmatched visuals came to the conclusion that if he wanted to explore with his photography something new, he would have to create it. This is how Ignacio Calleja “instant sculptures” was born. It set him in a path to intervene not only with the way photography can esthetically represent reality but to also intervene with reality itself as a new kind of sculpture artist with different rules that a traditional sculptor would work. Sculptures with the soul purpose of being photographed do not have to be permanent and do not have to be static for the sake of the viewer, because photography compensates those issues in capturing an instant.
Now the question of how often do we see something new? Is a colateral venture of this project called “instant sculptures” and this first specific color series called “ink sculptures”. To answer this question of course we are going to argue that age here is a factor. With exposure to social media and digital sharing also in the mix, our visual input is exponentially growing with the chances of encountering an original image are reducing day by day. Originality is far more scarce and far more valuable in these times even with AI going in to every venture. The uniqueness captured in every part of the pictures intends to explore the vast possibilities that we still have in photography.
The images posted here are amplified fractions of the original images of this series. Please keep posted to find out where an exhibition near you may be opening. If you are interested in hosting a photography exhibition of Ignacio Calleja’s pictures please write an email to ic@ignaciocalleja.com
Something special about this series:
if you isolate a small portion of the picture (1 cm X 1 cm) and try to find it repeated in an other part of the picture it is imposible because of the quantity of originality in the image.
